I find it ironic that there is no mention of the NAFTA's and CAFTA'S that have shipped so many jobs over seas! Not to mention the total screwups in or congress...Shame on you for such inept reporting!

You did a good job on describing the center. Also, the fact that you included information about this year's current events was good too. Now people will know that they are able to help spread awareness without actually working at the center. Good job!

I've known Mr. Avery for a good while now and I must say that as well written as this article is I don't think any article could do him enough justice. Will posses the ability to bring the best out in people and gives others the urge to be better in any aspect of life. He may be on the shorter side to be a guy, but God has granted him the ability to leave giant, long-lasting footprints in the lives of those around him. I'm proud to say I know him and he makes me proud to call him friend.

I want to clarify some things about The Humane Society of the United States and the issues that you are talking about. Thank you for discussing these issues!

Captive, or "canned" hunting, involves animals in fenced enclosures who have no ability to espace. Some ranches are quite large, while others are only a matter of acres. The animals on captive hunts range from deer and elk to exotic species like zebra and antelope, and even species listed as Critically Endangered and Extinct in the Wild under CITES like the scimitar-horned oryx, the addax and the dama gazelle. Many animals on captive hunts are obtained from zoos and roadside circuses when they become too old to draw a crowd. Many of the animals who are shot are tame and lured to a bait bile at a specific time each day. This is hardly fair and hardly sport.

Please visit the HSUS's website and view why they oppose hound hunting. The HSUS doesn't say the dogs are treated like slaves - they're treated like disposable hunting equipment. Many hunters abandon or shoot their dogs when they fail to hunt well, or become old, sick or injured. Animal shelters in many states are flooded with unwanted hunting dogs. Some report that 90% of their intake consists of abandoned hunting dogs. They also report that the dogs are typically emaciated and are hearworm positive. The dogs are often found having been shot, covered with fleas and ticks, and often afflicted with cancer or other ailments. It is wrong to dump their "trash" on local shelters. These dogs are often poorly socialized and difficult to find homes for, and are therefore often euthanized. These dogs are frequently hit by cars and maimed or killed when they're pitted against a bear. The HSUS never states that the tracking collars control where the dogs go, but many hunters fit their dogs with high-tech radio telemetry devices so that they can simply follow along in their truck. It is unfortunate that so many people view these animals as disposable, and even when the dogs are found and the hunters are called, the hunter states that the dog didn;t hunt well and he doesn;t want her anymore.

Your review has inspired me to see this film. I haven't been passionate about this issue and the "other side of the story" is rarely seen. I think it is great that they have done this documentary to show that people are really just people wanting a better life. What if Americans were fleeing to Mexico for work? I would want to be treated as someone who strived to provide and worked hard for my family, not just an intrusion.

Everyone has their own opinions of the immigration situation in America. I would hate to be looked at negatively if my only option to better the lives of my family and myself was to escape into Mexico. People should be somewhat grateful because these immigrants are doing jobs that most Americans would never resort to. There are some legal issues involved, but this documentary seems to make them seem more like humans and real people.

Whenever someone hears about child abuse, its hard to think about, but after listening to the presentation about child abuse and reading this, its hard to just brush it off. This is a good piece to draw attention to a problem so many are afraid to talk about.

Everything she does makes me feel like my "full-time" student status is no where up to par with hers! She seems like someone anybody would want to meet and be friends with!

good point with number of commercials during the game. they were very frustrating. as an athlete i have had to deal with the breaks in the middle of games and they take away from momentum you build.

This was a very interesting article that I think deserves more attention. I think if people were more aware of this social issue it would increase the public's sensitivity. I hope the meals on wheels does continue and expand in the future because it sounds like it is really important to those who receive its benefits.

When i was a freshman looking for a place to live sophomore year, reading this would have made house hunting a lot easier. This article has a lot of friendly (and smart) tips that i wasn't aware of until now. I had no idea that you could look at past crime reports through the police and be able to see which apartment complex's had safety issues and which ones would give you ultimate protection. I believe this is a well written piece and definitely adheres to what really goes on off-campus. Unfortunately this piece came to late for me but I'm sure other students reading this will learn a lot and hopefully follow some of the authors advice.

These pictures certain depict the energy and enthusiasm that many ECU students had after the election. As stated in the article, these pictures send a message that words can't describe. I thought the blurred image of the mass of people celebrating in front of West End not only showed the excitement of the crowd but also showed the mayhem of the moment. Awesome shots!

Ashley did a great job of really letting the reader get a glimpse to who Josh is. I can close my eyes and picture him, his hometown and almost feel the strength of his faith. It is nice to know that there are people on this campus who have strong convictions and are not scared to stand up for what they believe in. You did a great job in picking out one big thing in his life instead of giving a bunch of small, random facts about him. Good Job!

I really enjoyed this article. It is very easy to understand and gives students valuable information that many us( as students) do not know about. A person like me would still be clueless about leasing out apartments if I had not read this article, so I really appreciate you informing people like me about these types of things. I've seen many adds where they say you can get a coach bag or a Wii if you sign their lease. I always wondered about that cause I figure there has to be a catch.

At the start of the season the pirates were off to a great start. After the fourth game it was all downhill from there. With all the injuries our team's confidence was at an all time low. After dealing with a couple of loses that should have been easy wins, the pirates were still able to over come it all and become conference champions. Good job pirates!

This issue of weather marijuana should be legalized has been surfacing for many years now. The debate on weather if should be used for medical purposes or not has been the most recent.
A native of California I have seen the pharmacy's first hand. In reality marijuana is considered a harmful drug that in return has cured people of their medical issues.
The issue is not weather or not we should legalize marijuana. The issue is how does the government tax a rapid cash crop. How can they put regulations on a product that anyone can Google and produce on their own. It is possible to grow marijuana almost anywhere with the proper lighting and degrees.
So instead of looking at the one flower lets look at the entire garden.

I agree that ECU's campus is not safe. I feel like the areas near downtown should be kept more secure. There should be more policemen walking around the dorms of Clement and Fletcher, as those are dorms that face downtown. I understand that the university provides us with Campus Safety, but as far as I am concerned, I feel like Campus Safety should not include Criminal Justice students. I think anything having to do with keeping this campus safe should be handled by adults and not students.

Great Photos. Documented the night perfectly without even a story. As I witnessed this happen, there is no other way to describe the night better than with these pictures.

I really enjoyed reading this peice. The biggest issue students have after their first year is figuring out where they want to live next year off campus. Students are usually more concerned with where all their friends are living, they don't take the time to actually read the fine print and see what the lease entails. Students don't realize that apartment complexes will do anything to suck them in and get them to sign a lease do due emotional appeal rather than what they can afford, etc.

The pirates lost many of key players this year, but I never realized how many were season ending injuries. Also we lost Dominique Lindsay before the season even started. After looking at the presentation it is nice to think that even after all of the injuries we still had enough depth to put a winning team on the field. Go Pirates!

I completely agree that there should be more police officers patrolling campus at night. As an ECU student I also do not feel safe when I have to walk on campus alone at night. I know that we have those Emergency Blue Lights, but I'm not really sure how effective those are. The distance between the Emergency Blue Lights is pretty far. I think the ECU police should consider putting more in place. There are also several places on campus that are dimly lit. Better lighting in dark areas might also help students to feel more safe on campus. Ultimately, I think police patrolling would be the best way to increase safety on campus.

yes i agree. Our team started out on fire and were considered a top team in the NCAA. Soon after a few key losses, the hype was brought to a halt very quickly. Injuries will play a huge factor for any team playing any sport. The injuries this year to ECU played a huge role in how the season rolled along, Other than that, it was a great year for the Pirates. CONF. CHAMPS. !!

Well written. I agree, the next President has inherited a huge problem to take over, but I think that Obama and his diverse administration will find a logical solution to the problem, if there is one. I don't know what my stance on the whole bailout thing is, should we bail them out even though they put themselves in this predicament, or should we not bail them out, and then what if that causes our whole economy to dwindle even more? It's a tough situation, but I'm sure Obama and his administration will figure out something. Good story.

This was a very informative and well written piece. Shemeh seems like a nice person who everybody loves. She seems to be a positive person, and I like how Jay said, "with all the anger and turmoil that the world is going through right now, we need more Shemeh Shirbabadis." Very good story.

I must admit that when i was told of this type of grading, I was very skeptical and was wondering "What is he talking about?' However, I think many students are nervous about the grading system because they are not aware or accustom to it. As you said in the article "it is quite simple" and indeed it is. But because its so simple and so easy, it catches us by surprised. We are so use to the same grading system, of standarized test, organized papers, etc. when someone tries to change it up on us we freeze up. However, I think that this grading system is not only effective, yet practical. As previously stated, this class did a great job as preparing for real world experiences and jobs. This grading system i think pushes creativity and allows us to write on how we want to or how we percive the way an article should go. Many teachers give us a paper with so many rules and regulations its hard to be ourselves, but in this class our individuality is requested. Which again is hard to get accustomed too becase so many times its the complete opposite. Too bad we could only meet with you once in the semester to discuss our peices, it really gave myself a feel of where i was going, how my work was percieve from a Dr perspective, and also enjoyed the conversation.

As previously stated, the pictures are amazing. I think the contribution is a breath of fresh air, in regards to the website. It was fun but yet serious at the same time. I think the content and the depth of the pictures are something to commend, because when you look at the pictures you can actually feel our peers emotions in the pictures. I can only imagine how different these pictures may be, if the turn out of the election was different.

I believe that this style of teaching should be more adopted throughout ECU. The concept of having a teacher sit down and talk with a student about what grade they believe they should get after going over what they have written is ingenious. After reading this piece I was thoroughly enlightened because the methods used is nice breath of fresh air. For my entire collegiate careeer I have been told "You recieved an A or an B or an C" and so on. For so long I was graded on being right or wrong and it is pretty awesome that I had an opportunity to be graded this way. Not by right or wrong but by how the work was done and by the discussion of work during the mid term. It is now a shame that I have to go back again to the right and wrong theory of grading when this hybrid style of teaching of grading was VERY effective for me. Not only was it effective but it was also more motivating to me as a student.

I thought that this presentation was efficient because I liked how the group showed McCain in a non serious aspect while they showed Obama in a serious case. I thought the link McCain's tongue was freaking hilarious but also I thought it was kind of true. Its amazing how the media can make two candidates to be completely different.

This was a good article. Race did not play as big a role as anticipated but it did play a role during the campaign.

The photography in this is really amazing you have a keen eye for a great picture. I liked the all the pictures as it portrayed what happened election night as images and not in words. This is probably my favorite special contirbutions piece.

I thought this classmate profile was well written. It seems you put Tranells character into perspective. In the piece you really showed where Tranell has come from and really how he got to where he is today. I like how you wrote about his career aspirations about becoming a business owner and also how much he is involved in. I really enjoyed reading this piece.

I really enjoyed reading this profile. It was interesting and stood out from the rest because it began with a story. The story kept my interest peaked and I was glad that Aaron did not hit a deer! Although this seems like a minor account in Aaron's life, it shows a lot about his personality and the importance of friends.

Even though we lost 4 games, the Pirates are actually getting some votes in the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll as we are ranked 29th!!! WHEN the Pirates beat UK in the Liberty Bowl, we can hopefully move into the final rankings! GO Pirates!!

This piece did a superb job of explaining how your Comm. 2320 class functions. I felt like I could relate to this article because I was that student that saw the prior students' work on the website, and it kept me interested. At first I was a little skeptical about the grading method, but realized that it wasn't so bad. I have another Communications professor who has the same grading method, and I think it is extremely effective. I felt that the way the mid term review meetings were set up was an awesome way of speaking with the student, and telling them where they stand in the class. This way, one knows to get their act together, or they are doing something right. I enjoyed reading this piece, and felt that every entry in the essay did the job of explaining how you feel about this grading method.

This was a very informative piece. There were a few grammar errors and misspelled words, but other than that, it was very to the point, and definitely summed Jill up in a short essay. The only thing that confused me was the story about Jill waiting at the airport. I understand that she was being patient, it was just a tad confusing. Good job!

I think the very last thing you said is probably one of the biggest issues going on right now. Really, how can we make sure it's taken seriously and obeyed? It's kind of a catch-22 that most of the nations that put LOAC's in effect are the most powerful so no one is really going to stop them if they don't comply. It seems like it's never until decades later ,if at all, that anyone is ever brought to trial for any kind of war crimes.

In the case of Iraq and Afghanistan, I feel it should be the responsibility of NATO to enforce the Laws of Armed Combat on countries within the organization. (I would say the United Nations but in the past few years they've proved to be ineffective or maybe unconcerned.) As a part of NATO and in an operation using NATO provisions, ––NATO should hold countries and leaders (generals, presidents, whoever) responsible for violations of the Geneva Conventions.

There were more countries in NATO than just France that had issues with the way things went in Iraq. It's just a matter of who would have guts to actually take it to the level of accusing the United States of war crimes (not just in Iraq, but ever).

If you remember earlier this year, several news agencies covered Vermont's efforts to hold President Bush accountable for war crimes:

http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSN0454699420080305

but in the country, and the world, holding Western leaders accountable for committing the same atrocities of our "enemies" hasn't yet caught on. If President Bush was Comrade Bush it would be a different story.

Exploring the other side in-depth would be something interesting to take on, but I don't think that I would ever be able to find a way to justify the use of the atomic bomb in the that situation despite arguments presented in the past. Heavy direct bombing of military targets and training facilities (even targets embedded in civilian neighborhoods) could have been accomplished by the same American bombers, using 500 pound general purpose bombs, with less civilian casualties.

Would Iraq have been justified in using an atom bomb on Washington, DC to prevent the destruction of Baghdad and the Republican guard?

Sidenote: I know people would argue that war crimes are committed in parts of Africa all the time but you have to keep in mind that the Geneva Conventions only applies to parties/countries who have signed it.

I thought this presentation was great. Housing is such a big issue that effects all students here at ECU. So many students worry about where they are going to live each year, where their friends are living, and where the newest and coolest apartments are. This presentation takes a different look at signing leasing agreements with apartment complexes and urges students to take a better look at what they may be getting themselves into.

I enjoyed the "Image is Everything" presentation in class and reading it again on the website. This group took a different angle while observing the election and how it turned out. Image is everything in many things we face on a day to day basis. Linking the importance of image to the election was very creative, and this group did a great job discussing their position.

I actually enjoyed this presentation because it got away from all the staleness of politics. I am not one that enjoys politics for the least, but this was pretty funny and actually gave me a bit of hope for our future. It is nice to see that both of our political figures had a humourous side to them, and let me add...the dance scene was great. As for comedy central covering the elections, I feel like they put off bad vibes that could effect the voters, and should be limited to how much crap they can put on each candidate. Oh well, thats life.

Although I do like the picture as well, I think the perfect picture would be the one with T.J. Lee blocking the punt against Virginia Tech. I think some readers who aren't very football oriented would like to know who the mountaneers (West Virginia) are though. As for the story, it did it's justice and got the point across to the reader. The BCS will always have its flaws so we just have to learn to accept that. Other than that, Go Pirates!

After getting to know Bethany while working with her in class, I could not agree with Analicia anymore. Bethany is a very kind and determind woman.

I must say that Lizz sounds like quite a girl. Any girl that gets into sports as much as she does is well worth hanging out with sometime. I like how the write got so into detail about how she revolves a lot around sports, and it great that she is a Boston Red Sox fan. Unfortuanately, she is also a "dook" fan so we couldn't hang out that much. Overall, I like this.

I think this new approach/perspective may be slow to catch on but when it does I think the practicality of it will spread pretty quickly. Its a better way of doing things and I think when you're teaching, you should definitely keep in mind that you are trying to prepare the students for a real world environment where grades are given every task or assignment to let you know how you're doing ––you either get a raise at the end of the year or you don't. It's up to you to put in work.

And now the auto industry. It's pretty capitalist for me to say this, and I wouldn't normally take this stance on something but: Big businesses should be allowed to fail. That's the nature of the market. People should keep in mind that every time they deal with a major business there is some kind of risk to losing money involved. A "bailout" plan should start somewhere else like infrastructure projects...or creating more jobs.....so people can make more money.....to spend more money....and slowly fix the economy rather than a billion dollar band-aid that doesn't really seem beneficial in the long run.

Obama ended up getting the vote 65% of all registered voters (from the BBC Global Podcast on election night). I think that says a lot of about how the country came together to make something happen.

I think I got a lot of good information from this piece. It was really good at dispelling some of the rumors about both candidates. If you look on snopes.com there's a ton more with their origins and pretty extensive research about what is and isn't fact.

Dr. Timberg,
I enjoyed reading this article on the standards or grading, or lack there of. I appreciate how you think outside the box and push professor's limits to improve student's writing skills. I agree that teachers could grade one paper completely different than another teacher. I only wish every professor saw it that way. I have to admit I was not enthused at the prospect of a student web-site at the beginning of the semester. But thanks to the editing team of the class, I did not have to physically post anything on the site. I also appreciate that you honestly try to improve on teaching and respect our opinions of the class. This is refreshing news to a student and I respect the path your are making for grading.

This powerpoint was interesting to find that most of the students surveyed, barely knew more than the basic information about the political campaign. I also respected that the group interviewed so many people. It is also reassuring to know that most people were willing to talk about their experience and share their opinions with others.

I enjoyed reading this profile about Drew. I didn't know anything about him this entire semester and is cool to know some important things in his life. It is also interesting to know that he is graduating the same time as I am, with the same major and concentration. The quotes from his friends were interesting and insightful. He sounds like good friend to have.

I enjoyed the piece as well as the picture. It highlighted how well the season began and my comparing ECU to schools with such storied football histories, it showed how truly special the accomplishment was.
