A Dark, Shining Star
Unconventional, curious, and anything but “regular”; these are terms that come to mind when the name Isaac Thomas is brought into the conversation.
From the first conversation you have with Thomas you’ll know that you’ve never met anyone quite like him. His original and unique personality shines through his dark, gothic clothes.
His unconventional character may appear to be intimidating to some, but as soon as you break through the dark exterior, there is an interesting and caring person who lies beneath.
Thomas was raised in Burlington, North Carolina where his mother and stepfather still reside. Being raised with five siblings, it appears he was destined to be one-of-a-kind from the get-go.
In 2005, Thomas was a part of the Walt Disney World College Program, where fate lead him to best friend Kris Brown. “We were on a bus on the way to Wal-Mart or something, and he just walked up and started talking to me,” states Brown “He was my first friend [at Disney].”
Brown described her relationship with Thomas as if they were “attached at the hip” while participating in the college program at Disney World.
Although their friendship has stretched from North Carolina to Brown’s home state of Ohio, the two friends still manage to stay in contact through weekly phone calls and online messaging. And although Brown has only known her best friend for a little over 2 years, Thomas’s creative, and genuine personally are two of the many characteristics that led Brown to express him to be her “favorite person in the world.”
Thomas’s transition from summer back to ECU was far from ideal. From not being able to check into his dorm room upon arrival, to a dead car battery, it seemed as though when one thing went wrong, everything went wrong that created a rather hectic move back to Greenville.
After a transition similar to Thomas’s, some students might claim that being back at school was the last place he or she wanted to be. However, in spite of a rough start, “being back at school seems perfectly wonderful,” said Thomas.
As a graduating senior at East Carolina University, Thomas has ambitious yet obtainable goals for himself. With plans to join the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) program and teach the English language to students in Japan, there is no question that Isaac is ready to take on the world. Being a fanatic of J-rock and Anime (Japanese rock music and Japanese cartoons), Thomas will easily adjust to the transition of American to Japanese culture.
As a Communications major focusing in Production, Thomas’s life plan involves being the “brains behind the camera.” Working with film production in Japan would not be a foreign task for Thomas. He was highly involved in television production throughout high school and played a crucial role in producing the commencement video for his graduating senior class.
Every goal-oriented person has a backup plan, and for Thomas, his is to be involved in fashion design. To better prepare himself for the life of fashion, Thomas is currently taking two costume classes, where he is learning to sew.
Thomas’s Myspace profile voices his strong beliefs that there is not enough suitable men’s clothing for his individual style. It is hard not to smile when coming across the line that states, “Practically the only reason they make men’s clothing is to keep us from being naked.”
Thomas is already training himself to be an entrepreneur in the men’s artistic clothing line by designing and assembling his own wardrobe. “He doesn’t worry about the crowd; he takes the lead and doesn’t care whether people follow…he is confident in himself,” said Thomas’s proud mother, Tammy Beck.
A first impression of someone is what the mind usually bases opinions upon. In most cases, the impression is formed through initial contact, and it is often times difficult to change the original opinions one might have on another.
One could only be so lucky to come in contact with Thomas, and allow his bright personality to shine through his dark persona and leave a long-lasting, positive impression on one’s life.
