Baseball Fan
David Forbes walks into a room and the first thing to notice about him is his bright orange-red hair and his hazel eyes. He has a passion for baseball like no other and is a true home grown country boy from Greenville.
He played baseball at Campbell University for three years then transferred to East Carolina University and played baseball for one more year. He is now a fifth-year senior who hopes to graduate in May 2008, with a B.A. in Communication. He only became a communications major to play baseball because his credits did not transfer.
Forbes was born on July 10, 1985 and raised in Greenville, NC. He attended J. H. Rose high school and played baseball there as well, his only sport in high school. Three close friends Elizabeth Briley, Steven Jacobs, and Michael Flye, describe him as fun, shy, and nice.
Forbes has one older sister: Rebecca, 25 years old. His Dad Glenn owns a furniture store and his mother Lynn works at an orthodontist’s office. “Dave has a great relationship with his parents and sister,” says friend Michael Flye. “His parents are pretty laid back and funny just like him,” says Jacobs, who went to high school with Forbes.
Forbes has been playing baseball since he was 5 years old and has been on a summer baseball team since he was 8. “Baseball is his life that’s for sure,” says Briley, who has known Forbes for nine years.
In his thirty-second introduction Forbes brought in his prized baseball mitt. “He is really committed to baseball when he plays,” says Flye, who has been friends with Forbes for 16 years, but they never played baseball together.
When Forbes attended Campbell University he played baseball there for three years. He transferred to East Carolina University to play baseball because of a disagreement with his coach. The disagreement came when Forbes, his roommate, and another teammate got kicked off the team: The police were called to Forbes apartment because of a fight. Which Forbes, his roommate, and the other teammate where not there for. The boys appealed and got back on the team with a 15-game suspension.
From that point on Forbes started to have conflicts with his coach. When he asked for a release so he could play for East Carolina, the coach refused. Forbes appealed and got his release signed in the end. Right now Forbes is on a traveling softball team called The Young Guns.
Since Forbes didn’t play baseball this year because he became ineligible after four years, he had a lot of free time this summer. Now that school has started back Forbes has been really tired, and mainly because he has morning classes and he wasn’t used to waking up until noon. He still has a lot of responsibility this year: a puppy to take care of, classes to attend in order to graduate this May, and softball games to play.
Although Forbes has played baseball since he was a kid, he is still in other respects just like any other college student. He likes to hang-out with friends and drink in his free time. Forbes calls himself a country boy. He is good with cars and engines.
“He loves to go fishing, four-wheeling, and work on his trucks,” says Briley. He has two trucks both are Chevrolets: a 2006 and 1986. Flye described Forbes’ 1986 Chevrolet truck as “big and orange.”
Forbes also has a yellow lab puppy who is four months old. His name is Winston. “He puts a lot of effort into taking care of Winston,” says Flye. Winston wakes up with Forbes every day early in the morning. He too is not use to waking up until noon. “David spends a lot of time with Winston, Winston and my dog get along well,” says Jacobs.
Forbes described himself as shy, polite, and committed in his thirty-second introduction. One thing I think is most noticeable about David Forbes is his ability to commit to things. Forbes has been playing baseball since he was 5 years old and it takes a lot of commitment to play baseball or any other sport all your life until your about 21 years old.
Besides Forbes being committed he does seem to be a little shy, especially when you first start talking with him. “He is overall quiet unless he knows the people he’s around,” says Flye. And he is polite from what I can tell. He is a southern gentlemen because he always opens the door for a lady.
In conclusion Forbes seems to be a person of many good qualities. He is a gentleman, a baseball player, a college student, a good friend, and the father of a yellow lab puppy. Forbes has taken on a lot of responsibility this year, and he hopes to graduate this May 2008.
