Martha Bass Then and Now

martha bassMartha Bass is a beautiful brunette with Betty Boop’s lips and a timeless sense of style. That was the first thing I thought when I met this soft spoken, southern woman from Edenton North Carolina. Her parents had met and married at a young age there in Edenton and believed in a strong family environment for their children. So they felt that home schooling was more suitable than the influence of the public system in the surrounding rural area. Martha was raised along side her sister Mary. The two of them learned to read and played games together while being taught at home by their mother. Films from the black and white era often brought the family together to suffice for their lack of interest in television programming. Their Father managed many crops and animals on the Family’s Farm which provided the perfect school yard for his daughter’s imaginations to run around in.

When Martha reached young adulthood she was ready to see more outside of home. As she made friends in town she would learn more about film and music. Although she did not drive until she was eighteen, she would ride into town with friends to find ways to pass the time. While learning more about her early influences and teaching herself to play the guitar she met a suitable companion. The two of them would learn to play together and eventually started to entertain around town at local shops and events. However as with many small town first love relationships there were problems. Being older, her boyfriend had trouble dealing with her aspirations to go on to college and pursue a career path. But this separation was what Martha needed to look further within her self for answers.

While researching her interests she came across a Public Relations Firm online named Artists Repertoire. With the information provided about careers in music she decided that traveling as a recruiter for record labels might be fun. When she learned that the highest paid experts in that field have college degrees she decided to look into the state school system. That’s when she discovered the reputation of the Communications Department at East Carolina.

So in effort to actualize her dreams she left Edenton behind to study in the University system. While mourning her past relationship and feeling cut off from her small town roots, East Carolina seemed quite overwhelming at first with so many cultural influences and people her age. However, Martha was more than willing to learn. Again as she made more friends, her tastes in dressing and music blossomed. Influences which might have never been considered by her first love back home. Her imagination grew to the likes of which she had never fathomed and she found the end result of all this to be quite refreshing. After learning to enjoy so many different types of people, and so many sects of music, she saw the bigger picture and yearned to express what she was envisioning. So now she is working toward a degree in photo journalism. That way, she can show the world how she thinks it should be seen.
