Ryan DesRoches: Sports Anchor of the Future
Ten years from now, when you think of the name Ryan DesRoches, you’ll probably be thinking of a famous Sports Anchor who is doing amazingly in the sports journalism.
Working with professional teams ranging from soccer to football, DesRoches aspires to be the Greg Gumbel of the new era.
DesRoches is currently a student at East Carolina University, and aspires to graduate with a communications degree on Dec. 2008, specifically in broadcast journalism. He eventually wants to work on “Sports Center” for ESPN.
With his drive and determination, and just his general knowledge of all things sports, DesRoches has a shot of achieving his goal in this competitive field.
“Ryan is very much into sports. He remembers everything from teams to statistics,” says his mother Cindy Coyle.
DesRoches is a 22-year-old born in Fort Meyers, Florida on Nov. 6, 1984. He grew up in Virginia Beach, and graduated from Floyd Kellam High School in 2003.
DesRoches has brothers aged at 26 and 16, and a sister aged 19. He is the second oldest in his family, and the only one of his siblings to attend ECU.
DesRoches is very close to his sister Jessica. His mother Cindy says that they are the male and female counterparts of each other, and have never argued in their whole life, except for the time DesRoches made his sister eat a hot pepper.
DesRoches’s sister Jessica is only two years younger than him, which explains why they have such a strong bond.
DesRoches’s sister also agrees with the fact that he will become a great sports writer.
“He has always been really into sports his whole life, and I know he will do great in that area. Our whole family is very big into sports,” says his sister Jessica.
DesRoches is a huge fan of all types of sports, particularly football and soccer. He is a huge fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Washington Redskins.
DesRoches does have his picks of his favorite teams, but takes that love to a whole new level.
“He is not only a fan, but a fanatic about is favorite teams,” says Charlie DesRoches, DesRoches’s older brother.
Growing up in Virginia Beach and being near the water, DesRoches enjoys bass fishing and body boarding, which is kind of like surfing, but you don’t stand up.
DesRoches played soccer growing up, and was sport of his middle school and high school team.
“He was always playing some type of sport, like baseball, soccer, or basketball,” says his sister Jessica.
Soccer, particularly, was a learning experience for DesRoches.
“Playing soccer back in high school was one of the best experiences I have had. I learned a lot about discipline, dedication, and hard work,” he says.
Not only is DesRoches amazing in sports, he is very into navigation and geography. Ever since he was a little boy, he knew a lot about directions.
Every time we’d go somewhere like Disney World, Ryan would remember the location to all the places,” says his mother.
Aside from watching “Sports Center” to increase his already extensive knowledge in sports, DesRoches enjoys Discovery Channel shows such as “Man vs. Wild,” “Survivorman,” and the “Planet Earth Series.”
It’s surprising that DesRoches’s favorite movies have nothing to do with sports, and include “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “Scarface,” and “True Romance.”
When it comes to music, DesRoches’s enjoys country, classic rock, rap, and reggae. Some specifics would be Brooks and Dunn, sublime, Nas, Bob Marley, Damien Marley, and Hank Williams.
An interesting fact about DesRoches is that he once dislocated his elbow by falling out a tree house when he was 14 years old.
Although, when people ask him, he usually tells them that he dislocated his elbow from a shark attack, because it sounds cooler. You can still see the scars.
DesRoches is ambitious, determined and realistic. He has a good head on his shoulders, and will do amazingly in his future endeavors.
“He is really straightforward and dependable. He is respectable, a hard-worker, and very intelligent. He is also a really good friend,” says his brother Charlie.
“He’s a good friend and person, and lets me park at his house,” says Justin Spruill, DesRoches’s friend.
DesRoches’s friends and family show that he knows plenty about sports, which proves that he will do great in sports journalism.
“When it’s all said and done, I would like to be remembered for my love of sports and for my unbiased opinion,” DesRoches says.
