Social Butterfly
Marjorie Anne Shafer, who answers to the name of Meg, was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 21, 1986. She was raised in Chicago by her mother, Gwen, and her father, George, and lived there for eighteen years. She also lived with her older brother, Tom. Family is very important to Shafer, as is she to her family.
George Shafter, Meg’s father, loves his daughter very much. As any loving father does, he enjoys bragging about his little girl. He claims that the three words which would describe his daughter best would be maturing, sensitive, and soulful. George loves to spend time with his daughter, Meg. “We love to dine out at nice restaurants, go kayaking, vacation in Mexico, and attend theater and dance performances” George states. “She is extremely social and fun to be around” he adds. George recalls a time when Meg’s social personality really began to shine. He explains how outgoing Meg was when she was in preschool. “There was a Thai Princess that was enrolled at her preschool. She just walked right up to her, grabbed her hand, and showed her around.”
As a child, Shafer played roles ranging from tomboy to beauty queen. At a young age, Shafer enjoyed playing the exciting sport of soccer. However, at the age of four, she traded her soccer cleats in for ballet shoes. She loves dance and has been dancing ever since. Also during high school, she thoroughly enjoyed taking art classes and seriously considered art as a major when she moved on to college. Shafer was a very active member of her high school varsity dance team as well. Shafer and her dance team attended the state competition all four years of her high school career.
Five days after graduating from Libertyville High School in 2004, the Shafer’s wanted a change in scenery so they moved to Bolivia, North Carolina. She then began her college career at Eastern Carolina University. Shafer loves to dance and initially was a dance major for two years. She is now a senior and is working hard towards a degree in communication with a concentration in Broadcast Journalism. She is hoping to complete her degree within five years.
After graduating with a degree from ECU, Shafer hopes to return to Chicago and attend cosmetology school. Following cosmetology school, she wants to move to Los Angeles and open her own salon. However, her ultimate goal in life is to become a famous actress. Shafer is well on her way to achieving this life long dream. This past summer Shafer was in the movie “Cabin Fever 2” where she played the role of an extra in the prom scene. She is also considering becoming a television host because Shafer says “there is no memorization involved in this career”.
In her spare time she really takes pleasure in dancing, especially hip-hop, and enjoys drinking like most college students. Her favorite liquor is Captain Morgan. During her freshman and sophomore years Shafer was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. She even lived in the sorority house her sophomore year. Shafer is no longer a member of the Greek organization because she says “I just grew out of it”. She has been working in downtown Greenville at Still Life for the past two years. She enjoys her job, but she says it is getting old really fast. Also in her spare time, Shafer enjoys drawing, painting, and doing ceramics. Shafer really likes boys and she loves to shop. Josh Brown, 21, is Meg’s ex-boyfriend and good friend. Shafer and Brown met a week before spring break of 2007 through their best friends. Brown says that Shafer is outgoing, pretty, and fun. The two enjoy doing absolutely anything, as long as they’re together. One activity Brown can recall doing with her is working out. They really like to go running. Shafer says that she is extremely lazy and she sleeps whenever it is possible. She describes herself as naive, sociable, shameless, and caring.
Brittany Mathieu, a fourth year student at ECU, is Shafer’s roommate. Mathieu is a Communication major with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in English. Shafer and Mathieu met freshman year when they both took physics in the fall. They also rushed the same sorority, Alpha Phi, and became sorority sisters. Mathieu describes Shafer as a bubbly, outgoing, and fun person. Together they enjoy watching movies, tanning, and shopping. They always have fun and act crazy together. Mathieu revealed a story about Shafer, but couldn’t help but laughing while explaining about a time when an ambulance rushed her to the hospital. They were driving together and Shafer was chewing on a bottle cap. Suddenly she started choking, claiming that she had swallowed the cap and was having chest pains. They pulled over and immediately called an ambulance. She was rushed to the emergence room where they spent ten hours. She had a chest x-ray, yet the doctor never found the bottle cap. “She probably just dropped the cap on the ground”, Mathieu said. “We tease her because she is so overdramatic.”
