Surf’s Up
Although he loves Pirate Football, there is no other place Garrett Anderson would rather be then on the beach, riding a big wave in on his surf board and the wind blowing in his hair. Garrett Anderson, a junior at East Carolina University, was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina.
He loves the beach and his favorite thing to do is to surf.
“I used to go to the beach and I saw a lot of people surfing. So I decided to try it. I rented a board and got hooked, it’s so addicting. When I am surfing, I feel relaxed and I am not worried about anything else. Surfing is the only thing I am thinking about” says Garrett.
After graduating high school, Garrett didn’t know what he wanted to do. He had a couple of options, but didn’t know where he belonged. He choose ECU because it was close to home and he had a couple of friends here.
He also enjoys playing video games, especially Madden Football, playing sports, and watching football. Garrett likes to go to sporting events with his friends and watching TV.
When he is at home in Wilmington, Garrett and his friends enjoy watching TV and movies, but you can usually find them at the beach surfing.
“Garrett is thoughtful in many ways. He doesn’t speak much but what he says is important. He has a great sense of humor and is athletic. Garrett follows through on projects. He is not much of a joiner, but views from the sidelines where his observations are quite astute,” said Garrett’s mom, Barbra Anderson.
According to Garrett’s roommate Kory, he is honest, reliable, and funny.
“Garrett is a quiet guy, but once he gets to know you he opens up pretty quickly and he’s fun to hang out with,” said Kory.
Garrett loves to listen to music. His favorite band is Sublime, but he also enjoys classic rock and rap. His favorite movie is “Remember the Titans”.
Garrett has a younger sister named Rachel who is in the seventh grade. His mom just finished her masters and is a librarian at an elementary school. His dad works for the nuclear power plant in South Port, North Carolina.
Garrett and his family have a lot of pets. They have two dogs, Jake and Gus, 4 cats, 5 rabbits, 1 bird, and fish.
“My mom can’t say no to animals” said Anderson.
Garrett is a Communications major at ECU. But, he doesn’t know what he wants to do when he graduates, next May, but something involving sports.
“Honestly I have no clue exactly what I want to do, but I know it involves sports in some way; whether it’s working with a team or for some type of organization that has to do with sports” said Anderson.
Garrett is involved in the Volleyball and Flag Football intramural teams here at ECU. He knew a lot of people from High school at ECU, but many of them have already graduated from school. His current roommate is one of his childhood friends named Bobby Duke.
“Garret is a genuine nice guy, kind of shy when you first meet him, but very outgoing and caring when you get to know him” said his roommate Bobby.
Although Garrett loves ECU and loves the Pirates, he dislikes the city of Greenville. He says it is his least favorite thing about ECU. His favorite thing about ECU is the support that the Pirate sports teams get from their fans.
