Mendenhall Undergoes 2-Year Renovation
East Carolina University’s student union Mendenhall will undergo a $38 million renovation starting in May 2008.
Mendenhall, which was first built in 1974, will be completely remodeled to provide students with a more up to date student union. The university is trying to expand to help students learn and grow in an advanced environment.
Builders hope to add an Italian Renaissance style to help Mendenhall look modern just like Jarvis and Cotton halls.
Although Mendenhall will be closed until fall of 2009, East Carolina University and the Event Planning office have done an excellent job to put together alternate locations for student activities.
The new Mendenhall’s main floor will be devoted to the new home of the Student Government Association and other student offices. The event planning office plans on moving to “Mini Mendenhall West” modular #2 which will be located in the B1 Parking Lot off of 10th Street.
Students will be able to still watch movies and go bowling. On select nights, students can go to the event planning office to get movie passes for movies being shown at Greenville Grande. Also, AMF Bowling Lanes will have select nights when ECU students can bowl for free.
Some students have expressed sincere concern for their student organizations. However, E.C.U hopes to make it an easy transition for the next 2 years.
“ I didn’t even know about it at all ” says Junior Kory Ison of the Mendenhall renovations. Nonetheless, some students are not even informed of this catastrophic change to the student union.
There has not been a lot of advertising around Campus except for select parts of campus. However, many students have said that Mendenhall is long overdue for renovations.
“The building is not very accessible now and it’s not physically inviting,” says Kenneth Luker, an architect with Freelon and Associates in RTP.”
The university has thought the planning process through in hopes that every student enjoys the brand new Mendenhall in fall of 2009.
