Who Cares? The Issues
Our power point presentation discussed several of the different issues that faced the 18-29 demographic during the November 4, 2008 Presidential Election. Although there were many issues facing the young voters this election, the issues we ultimately decided to research were taxes (the economy), the war in Iraq, same-sex marriage, abortion and healthcare. After finding the candidates stance on these issues, each group member was to find people in the 18-29 year old demographic and ask them a few questions on the issue they were given to research.
We began our slide show with one slide dedicated to each running mate. For the Democratic party Barrack Obama and for the Republican party John McCain. The first issue discussed was taxes/the economy. Each candidates’stance on taxes and their proposed plans were listed on separate slides to help the audience breakdown and understand the difference in each candidates’ position on the issue. On the following slide (slide 6) there is a 28 second video from you tube of a young male telling his story about owning a small business and how the proposed tax plan from Barrack Obama would be worse for him and others in his situation financially. Below the video is listed a direct quote from the interviews regarding this issue. On this same slide there is another video that shows a speech by Barrack Obama on his tax proposal.
The second issue discussed was the war in Iraq. The proposals of each candidate were listed on separate slides. The slide to follow shows the opinions of two different college students interviewed and their thoughts on the war. This slide includes an anti-war video that should start at 1 minute 30 seconds and continue to 2 minutes 15 seconds. The third and fourth issues discussed are abortion and same sex marriages. With a slide for each candidate’s stance on these issues and quotes from the interviews conducted. The last issue discussed was healthcare. With an entire slide dedicated to explaining how healthcare is currently. The next two slides discuss Obama’s proposed healthcare plans and then John McCain’s proposed plans. The last slide discussing healthcare shows quotes from the interviews conducted and the concerns that our demographic have for their healthcare policies.
Through researching the internet and interviewing our peers we were able to convey an understanding of what issues were most important to the “young voters” and with which party their vote would fall. After Election Day our group gathered screen shots from CNN of the polls taken to show where specific demographics stood. The young vote DID matter just as we expected.

This was one of my favorite powerpoints. It was extremely clear and professional looking. I enjoyed the uniformity and the fluidity of the whole piece. Well done!
I really enjoyed your PowerPoint presentation. I liked how you brought the students’ opinions into your facts about the candidates. I also love the background that you chose for your PowerPoint. Great job!
