A Laugh Out Loud Event

East Carolina University hosted a HumorFest Conference last week. This unusual cultural event consisted of a variety of panels and shows, which began on November 1st and lasted for three days.

One event that occurred during the conference was a viewing of three funny short-films that were chosen to be shown. The event was open to the general public on campus, not only to students and faculty members. A speaker was present at the showing of the short-films to give a brief introduction for each film. He gave a short bio on each of the films’ creators and a brief synopsis about the film.

The first short-film that was shown was “Southern Fried Chop Suey,” a Kung Faux Comedy directed by Andy Puckett. The film looked like an old Japanese action movie; it even looked like the translation of the audio did not match the actors’ mouths in the film.

The film is about the “Sword of the Norri,” which possesses the power of 1,000 round house kicks. The evil Teacher Master steals the sword and it is up to Jimmy-San to rise to the challenge to defeat Teacher Master and retrieve the sword. The effects of the movie along with the humorous storyline and witty dialogue throughout the film kept the audience very entertained.

The second short-film that was shown was titled “Captain Amazing-Lad,” created by Keith Carter. This film was an animated series about an action hero named Captain Amazing-Lad who also deals with the everyday struggles of life as a male, for example his nagging wife. The film consisted of more adult-type humor. The audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy this short-film.

The last short-film shown was titled “Archer House,” which was written and directed by Dina Gachman. This film is about the inside world of Southern sororities. The film pokes at certain stereotypes of sororities and events that take place within a sorority, such as hazing and rituals.

This film did make the audience laugh and I believe that it was also intended to strike the emotions of audience members as well. At the end of the film the speaker did mention that the creator of the film enjoys receiving feedback about the film from people who have viewed it. The speaker released Gachman’s contact information for those who might be interested in giving her any thoughts about the short-film.

The funny short-film event presented through the HumorFest Conference proved to be a success. The speaker was well informed about each of the short-films and the audience seemed to be well entertained. The East Carolina University HumorFest Conference was truly a laugh out loud event.
