How Much do You Really Know About Politics?

Through extensive research around campus about the political campaign we discovered how much the student body of East Carolina University truly knows about the politics. We gave an exploratory survey to 100 East Carolina Students and asked them numerous questions about politics. Some questions were simple yes or no questions that all the participants answered but when asked more specific questions such as how they felt about a candidates certain stand on an issue, they were either very vague on the subject or didn’t answer at all. When the surveys were completed we came to the conclusion that many of the people we surveyed didn’t know more than just the basic information. For example, when asked what issues are most important, the standard answer would be the war, the economy, taxes or healthcare. General answers were given but no specifics. We also learned that the majority of the participants learned about each candidate through television and the internet. When asked if they got their information through shows such as “The Daily Show” or “The Colbert Report”, almost all had admitted to watching them but only about 20% said that these shows affected their decision. Although 90% said that celebrities had no affect on their decision, we can never really know if they would tell us if that percentage is actually true. Many people might be embarrassed to admit they are influenced by media and celebrities. Most of the participants believe that race was a major issue in this election, but when asked if experience will play a role in the election they answers were spilt. To collect this data we went around campus asking anyone and everyone to fill out the survey. We had two sets of surveys. One survey was very basic and only had fourteen questions while the other survey was more in depth and had thirty questions. Participants were more willing to fill out the shorter survey because there were more yes and no questions than questions were a written answer was needed.
In conclusion to our research we discovered that most people are willing to talk about their politics and what they know but not a lot of them knew specific facts. Everyone had an opinion but few could really say what their opinion was on certain issues. They would tell us they were either Democratic or Republican and how they felt on the general topics but few could explain why.

  1. This powerpoint was interesting to find that most of the students surveyed, barely knew more than the basic information about the political campaign. I also respected that the group interviewed so many people. It is also reassuring to know that most people were willing to talk about their experience and share their opinions with others.
