Far From Typical… Megan Walker Reavis
It was my turn, and Dr. Bernard Timberg looked directly at me. “Why don’t you two work together,” he suggested, moving his two fingers back and forth as if he personally were manually connecting us together. “Ok,” was our simultaneous response. We turned and looked at one another and I thought, “Her name is Megan right? Let’s find out who she really is…boring?….smart?…typical?”
There is a story of a couple out of Oxford, North Carolina: Sandra, a high school guidance counselor and her husband David, working for an electronics company. David Reavis already had three daughters and then on September 1, 1988… along came the fourth. Brown hair, blue eyes, sweet North Carolinian. Megan Walker Reavis arrived, a bundle of joy making Sandra Reavis a new mother.
Nowadays, that baby girl has grown into a 19-year-old woman. Megan travels about two hours every other weekend to her hometown of Henderson where she works at the visitor’s center of Kerr Lake State Recreation Area. She currently lives in Greenville, where she has rejoined the East Carolina family for her second year of school. She is a communications major with a concentration in print journalism and is considering business for her minor. Her career goals are not yet set in stone as she takes some time to explore her options.
One thing that Megan is certain of is her enjoyment of photography.
She would have liked to be a photography major, however ECU does not offer this program without the requirement of being an art major. She blushes and adds, “… I just cannot draw.” She became interested in writing after she was tasked with taking pictures for her high school magazine, Crinkum-Crankum. Her artsy side is revealed when she admits that she is also a fan of poetry.
Unlike the average college student of today, Megan owns up to the fact that she is not very technologically savvy, which is why she is not a frequenter of MySpace or Facebook. She enjoys watching “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Monk”, but her friends say that she is more likely to be reading a book than staring at the tube.
When asked about her personality, Megan claims herself to be “easy-going.” She accompanied that remark with the fact that she is organized, but a procrastinator who is picky about what she eats, is not “a morning person”, and hates washing dishes. So is it safe to say that Megan seems like the typical college-aged girl? Three special people say that she’s much more.
“Megan is sweet; she’s an extremely kind person.” Sarah Capron, fellow ECU Pirate, is Megan’s best friend. The two met their freshman year of college when they ended up in five classes together. She says that she and Megan share common goals and their drive to do their best.
To Sarah, Megan has been far from typical. Sarah says that Megan may be shy and quiet, but she is fun and has made Sarah’s life easier by being such “an easy person to talk to.” A common topic of discussion for Megan, according to Sarah, is Glenn Long.
“…her eyes and her smile.” That’s where the fish is on the hook for Megan’s boyfriend Glenn. Glenn shares that he and his love enjoy going out to eat and checking out new movies at the theatre together.
Glenn also shares that Megan often talks of her future and school. Glenn says that his girl would be great at anything she chooses to pursue. He just hopes that her career is safe and enjoyable.
A best friend and a close boyfriend may be as close as it gets when it comes to knowing Megan. But who would know a person better than family? Consequently, it was Megan’s oldest sister Jennifer White that had the most to say of her baby sister, making it more than clear how much she adores Megan.
“I know that I can trust her with anything and that she will always be there for me.” She describes Megan as a very passionate and caring person. “She really cares for her family and will do anything she can to help someone in need.”
Jennifer adds that Megan is also an animal lover. She gives the details of a time when one of the family cats got injured. It was the caring ‘Dr.’ Megan who treated her until she was well!
Jennifer reveals that she has always felt obligated to set a good example for Megan. With an eleven-year age difference between the two, Jennifer knew that her sister was watching and listening to her. Megan’s closest friends see that Jennifer’s “good example” went a long way.
When asked about her own character, Megan’s modest replies may have made her seem to be the typical girl. But the people who love her most wouldn’t stand to let her true colors go hidden. They make it known that Megan is the kind of person that the world could never have too many of. Best friend Sarah declares that Megan’s best trait is “her motivation.” Jennifer reminds us, “No challenge is too great for Megan. She will not settle for just anything. She works very hard to get what she wants.” Glenn proclaims that Megan has made his life easier and isn’t too shy to say, “I know I have found that special someone for me.”
A person can have a million things to say about themselves. True character is only revealed by the company one keeps. By exploring one person, Megan, through three of the most important people in her life, I can now answer my own question of who this girl really is. She
